Wales Borderers in South Africa, Zulu
War, 1879, and had had some of his sketches published in the ILN. After
leaving the Army he had some success with illustrated books based on his
service experiences in India and Africa, On Active Service and Sketches
of Indian Life, followed by this item promoting the P & O line and
another of 1896 Union Jottings a similar exercise on behalf of the Union
Line. This is a charming account of a trip undetaken from Tilbury to
India via the Suez Canal. Wonderfully well-observed scenes of life on
board - "In the Bay - Dressing for Dinner", "Gibraltar", "Malta", "Port
Said", "In the Canal", "In the Red Sea", "Evening in the India Ocean"
&c. Humorously rendered, but without doubt a life-like picture of
what must have been familiar scenes to generations of "Servants of the
Empire.
