Tales of the Century or Sketches of the Romance of History Between the Years 1746 and 1846 by John Sobieski and Charles Edward Stuart, Edinburgh James Marshall, London Charles Dolman, printed by Robert Tofts, 135 High Street. 1847 first edition, 300 pages, attractive Ossianic and religious frontispiece lithograph by John Sobieski (Machure &MacDonald lithograph; Glasgow). This edition was from the collection of Douglas H. Campbell. Dark green hardboard binding with some staining and evidence of age and use; paper title and author label pasted to the spine. The frontispiece and final page are loose from the binding at the top - which you will perceive from the images - but other than that the rest of the volume is in good, clean condition the only signs of wear being demonstrative of its age. The book outlines the dubious history of the brothers in relation to Bonnie Prince Charlie or Charles Edward Stuart and various other interesting and lively subjects from Ossianic elements to antiquarian Highland Scottish essays.
As a University of Oxford researcher I know that this volume is rare; there are one or two copies in the Rare Books and Manuscripts reading room at the Weston Library, the Bodleian Library and two in the National Library of Scotland.
